When you configure Windows XP to automatically update, the computer
will routinely check the Windows Update Web site for high-priority
updates that can help protect your computer from the latest viruses
and other security threats. The downloads from Windows Update can
include security updates, critical updates, and service packs. Depending
on the setting you choose, Windows automatically downloads and installs
any high-priority updates that your computer needs, or notifies you
as these updates become available.
To setup for automatic download and installation of high-priority
updates, follow the steps below.
STEP 1: Click on the
START button.
STEP 2: Click on the
CONTROL PANEL.
STEP 3: Click on AUTOMATIC
UPDATES.
STEP 4: Select AUTOMATIC:
Automatically download updates for my computer and install them.
STEP 5: Choose the
frequency and time of when your computer will check for updates.
STEP 6: Click on APPLY
to save your settings and click OK to close the window.
Remember that your computer must be turned on and connected to the
Internet to download and install any high-priority updates. Also,
choosing the frequency to update everyday is best for most computers.
Choosing to have the computer check everyday will keep your information
secure with the most current release of updates. Also, by choosing
to have the computer check everyday, your computer will resume checking
for any updates if a schedule update session has been missed. Again,
this option will keep your computer operating with the most current
security updates.
